Okra and Indigo by Azania Tripp: Opening Reception, Artist Talk, and Community Conversation on Creative Placemaking

November 12 @ 11:30 am

Join us for the opening reception of Lyricality’s 2024 Artist In Residence on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM at SCTCC Multicultural Center, Alliance Room, 1540 Northway Drive, St. Cloud, MN (Door 4).

Azania Tripp, Lyricality Artist in Residence 2024

Azania Tripp’s Okra and Indigo thoughtfully engages with themes of food, culture, community, and historical trauma. The exhibition is inspired by the book High on the Hog by Jessica Harris and the accompanying TV series by the same name. The artist utilizes a combination of materials such as indigo cloth, jasmine rice, resin, and paper collage to highlight the importance of food as a symbol of survival, storytelling, and connection to ancestors. Azania uses storytelling to showcase food as both sustenance and a living archive of resilience, historical trauma, and our connection to the past through the beauty of shared memory, family, and survival.

Azania Tripp, LGSW, lives and works in the Twin Cities, where she is a mental health therapist at Reviving Roots Therapy and Wellness and the business owner of Obsidian. She sees important connections between her artmaking and social work. Both support people in seeing that they are not alone in the world. She is a Minnesota native and self-taught artist who spent the early years of her practice focused on creating mixed-media paper jewelry. Azania’s work has been exhibited at the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery and the Duluth Art Institute.
